1. Don Callis (The Invisible Hand)
Coming back to Impact with Scott D’Amore in 2017, Don Callis brought a “broken company” up from the ashes of the Global Force Wrestling era. He would work on the commentary team alongside Josh Matthews, often trading insults & jokes, rooting for his favourites & adding some much needed refreshment to the atmosphere. His character was Heel & he played this role out perfectly.
After stepping back from commentary, Don Callis was rarely seen on our screens. He still worked with Impact, but his next big move wouldn’t come on Impact Wrestling. Don Callis appeared as a guest commentator on AEW as requested by Kenny Omega (who was facing former tag partner Adam Page for the number one contendership for Jon Moxley’s World Title). On December 9th, he would return to AEW again on commentary & then interfere in the match, cause Kenny Omega to win & they would both run out of the building, straight into Don’s limo & drive off, telling all the AEW fans to tune into Impact Wrestling to find out what’s next for Kenny Omega.
After several weeks of backstage segments with Omega & The Good Brothers, Don Callis’ next stage of his plan soon started to unravel. After Rich Swann beat Chris Bey at Final Resolution 2020, Kenny Omega was next to come after our World Champion. Don Callis would begin provoking Swann & The Motor City Machineguns, getting them into a 6 man tag match at Hard To Kill 2021 (Alex Shelley replaced by Moose after stepping away for personal reasons), Moose would still be under his Heel role but, like Rich Swann & Chris Sabin, Don Callis bringing Kenny Omega over (and by now he’d also helped The Good Brothers attack the Motor City Machineguns several times) was crossing the forbidden line you just don’t cross. Kenny Omega would beat Rich Swann in the 6 man tag, now building their rivalry & rapidly changing the direction of the partnership between Impact Wrestling & AEW.
When Rich Swann defeated Moose to unify Impact’s 2 World Title belts, Don Callis was making it more clear that his ties with Impact were loosening. Kenny Omega is his priority, Omega is (to use his words) “Family” & Don Callis had pulled the wool over the world’s eyes on what this relationship really is between AEW & Impact Wrestling.
Omega would beat Rich Swann at Rebellion & now Moose is next on his list at Against All Odds. Don Callis is currently stopping Sami Callihan from getting closer to the World Champion. The Invisible Hand is currently the hottest Heel in pro-wrestling. All we can do now, is sit back & enjoy the ride. This isn’t Impact Wrestling vs. AEW. It’s Impact Wrestling vs. Don Callis…
Thanks for reading. Leave any other potential candidates in the comments, who’s on your list? The 5 others mentioned above aren’t the only ones I’d had in my list, Volume 2 will be underway soon.
