10 Forgotten WWE Upsets
Whilst in the modern-day many fans believe their wrestling is too predictable, sometimes the bookers pull a switch and swerve us with an upset. In this, a write-off wrestler manages to get a surprising win over a more established or bigger star. There have been many instances of this throughout WWE history from The Kid defeating Razor Ramon to The Hurricane beating The Rock, these are some of the most memorable and iconic shock wins in WWE history that are less well-known.
Paul Roma defeats Bret Hart (December 26, 1987)
A certified tag team wrestler, Roma would find a relatively successful alongside Hercules in Power and Glory however before that, he was a member of The Young Stallions.
Although now remembered as determined yet fodder babyfaces, the duo of Paul Roma and Jim Powers got a big push in 1987. This included challenges for the likes of Demolition’s tag titles and surviving to the end of the 1987 Survivor Series 20-man tag bout and even a pinfall victory over former World Tag Team titleholder Bret Hart.
In Buffalo, New York, a tag bout between the Stallions and Hart Foundation was set – however a Neidhart no-show foiled those plans. In a singles bout, future enhancement talent Powers got a shocking victory over ‘The Excellence of Execution’. Declaring this win a fluke, ‘The Hitman’ challenged Roma, who promptly defeated Bret, marking two consecutive losses for Hart. This would be repeated the next night on the 27th.
Although ‘The Pink and Black Attack’ was not yet an Intercontinental, WWF, or WCW champion, it was still an unseen win for Roma, whose career trajectory would plummet soon after, slipping down the card. Roma’s career after did have some success with him teaming with Hercules and even joining the Four Horsemen, but nowhere near the level of Bret Hart.
