The dark side of Summer’s biggest event

Here at Wrestlebuddy, we have previously counted down the shortest, best IC title matches, best triple threats and best main events in SummerSlam history. We have spoken about Bret Hart vs Davey Boy Smith, Jeff Hardy vs CM Punk, the first TLC match and The Ultimate Warrior vs The Honky Tonk Man but behind the veil of greatness, there is a whole load of SummerSlam moments you won’t see recapped.

From bad booking to treacherous matches, we will count down “The Biggest Party of The Summer”’s super summer sizzler-sized sandstorm of saddening spectacles.

10. Lex Luger vs Yokozuna (SummerSlam 1993)

1991 and 1992 especially had been great SummerSlam events for the WWF but as they started their dip in the mid-90s, the 1993 event illustrated the faults of the company at the time. Needing the Heavenly Bodies to fill the tag void, a Ludvig Borga match and the second Giant Gonzalez vs The Undertaker match (we’ll get to that), it was not a successful event.

Highlighting this most was the main event. With wrestlers not backing Lex Luger – the blond, muscly Hulk Hogan replacement, he needed to keep the belt on Yokozuna but couldn’t have a heel win close the show. In the end, Luger hit Yoko with his bionic forearm and won by count-out; celebrating his win with faces holding him high on his shoulders, balloons and waving the US flag. However, Lex had not won the belt – with the Japanese 600-pounder retaining so making Luger look like a buffoon by blowing his WWF title shot.

That’s not even talking about the match itself. I personally quite like both guys but neither were Ricky Steamboat in-ring. It was better than their WrestleMania 10 match but still not exactly a Dave Melzter 5-star classic, not even in the Tokyo Dome!
