Throughout the 2000s and up until about 2015, the women’s division in WWE was an afterthought. Either terribly booked – if it all – or with all women objectified with bikini contests and bar and panties matches, however perhaps two women may stand out as genuine athletes in this time.

In the first half of this era, we had Trish Stratus. Originally just a bit of show for the male fans, the untrained Trish became one of the company’s greatest assets within a few years. Going on to become a 7-time Women’s champion, she buoyed the roster even in times of weakness – working well as a face and particularly as a heel. Having had brilliant feuds with Lita, Mickie James and Victoria, she is now a rightful Hall of Famer. Beth Phoenix is a 3-time Women’s and 1-time Divas champion whose work-rate stood way above her colleagues in her WWE run – looking like a wrestling god next to the less talented performers. A huge, powerful athlete, she became WWE’s youngest ever WWE Hall of Famer.

Both have come out of retirement for big PPV matches in the past few years. The two never crossed paths with Phoenix debuting originally as an ally of Trish before being moved back to OVW. When ‘The Glamazon’ returned, Stratus had left the company so the relationship could not be followed up on.
