As the year winds down, and what a year it was, we still have one more moment to look forward to before 2022 closes its doors for good. John Cena.
In a year that saw A LOT of wrestling news, we all glanced over the fact that this almost became the first year we hadn’t seen Mr. Hustle, Loyalty & Respect in a wrestling ring since he made his on-screen debut all the way back in 2001. In our defense, we had a lot on our plate. A LOT!
Teaming with Kevin Owens on Smackdown to take on Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn will definitely be a fun moment for wrestling fans to experience, but beyond that, what’s next for John Cena? Wrestlemania season is weeks away from finally beginning and with it taking place in Hollywood, we all know that WWE is looking to make it as big as they possibly can. With John Cena being one of the top stars the world of professional wrestling has ever seen, it’d be crazy to imagine him NOT being in the plans.
But what will his role be? I, along with many others, am of the belief that Austin Theory is the no-brainer decision to go with here. With Theory crowned as the “next big thing” due to all the tools he possesses along with the many similarities he shares with John Cena himself, it would be a massive letdown for the new regime. There aren’t many no-brainers when it comes to bringing in part-time talents, so when you have one at your fingertips, you need to capitalize on it. This is one of those moments.
However, I am going to explore three other options for John Cena at Wrestlemania 39 in case they have completely lost their minds and decided to go against the obvious Austin Theory versus John Cena match. So here we go:
1. Gunther
If Austin Theory wasn’t a thing in WWE right now, this would be the next no-brainer to book. It’s not that Gunther needs the rub at this point. He’s doing amazing with his current Intercontinental Championship run and looking stronger as the weeks continue to pass by. The one thing he doesn’t have under his belt though? Gunther has yet to chop down one of those big names that make the fans open their eyes and say “oooooh, he’s on THAT level!” John Cena fits that bill perfectly.
And this is a match that has a story already in play. John Cena returns. John Cena announces he has one thing left to accomplish in WWE before he can finally call it a career. He’s never won the Intercontinental Championship and that’s what he aims to do. Gunther versus John Cena is now officially off to the races for Wrestlemania and would be one of the marquee matches for the big two-night event.
2. Edge
John Cena’s greatest rival in the eyes of many fans was Edge. And with all the classic match-ups the two had, back-and-forth promos, and memorable segments it could be looked at as the defining rivalry of the Ruthless Aggression era. Unfortunately, we never got to see real closure to that feud as Edge was forced to retire early due to a serious neck injury.
Fast forward years later, Edge is back and continuing to do great work in his later years. With his feud with Judgment Day coming to an end(finally!) at the Royal Rumble, his schedule appears to be wide open for Wrestlemania. A quick look at the roster and there are not many names that jump out at you for Edge to find himself working with. John Cena is a guy that could step in and I would be hard-pressed to think their chemistry wouldn’t click instantly after all these years. It’s not the most ideal match to have but it presents the chance for these two to write the final chapter to one of the all-time feuds in WWE history and what better place to do so than at the biggest show of the year, where John Cena and Edge never had a one on one match up.
3. Stone Cold Steve Austin
In my opinion, John and Steve are two members of the all-time professional wrestling Mount Rushmore. They represent two of the 3 largest draws the business has ever seen and you would be hard-pressed to find any fans that don’t hold these two talents high on the list of greatest of all time. When you have the opportunity to put two of those names in a match on the grandest stage of them all, it’s hard to pass up on that. And whereas I don’t think they should due to better options being available, we can’t ignore the significance this match would have. John Cena versus The Rock was great. John Cena versus Steve Austin? That’s a whole other level.
Stone Cold is a guy that has always been about two things. Giving the fans the best product he possibly can and making as much money as possible while doing so. A super match with John Cena accomplishes both of those things. They both are excellent storytellers who can cut top-tier promos while holding the fans in the palm of their hands. Over the last 25 years, these are the two largest personalities the wrestling world has seen and with Stone Cold leaving the business in 2003, we weren’t that far away from seeing this match happen at the beginning of John Cena’s ascent to the top. A “what if” moment if there ever was one and now it could be a reality? I wouldn’t be mad at it and I can assume that a majority of the wrestling world wouldn’t be opposed to it either.
So there you have it. Agree or disagree? Sound off in the comments and let me know what you think.
