5 Takeaways From AEW Dynamite (July 14th 2021)
New Champion!
In a rare occasion and only 2nd time on AEW Dynamite, Brian Cage defended his FTW championship on this week’s edition against Ricky Starks. After previous retentions on Dark against Brandon Cutler and Brian Pillman Jr., ‘The Machine’ was unseated for the belt this week by ‘Absolute’ Ricky Starks making his in-ring return after time off for neck surgery.
This title win came when in the climax of the bout, Team Taz finally stabbed Cage in the back with Powerhouse Hobbs knocking out Cage with the title belt so that Starks could wriggle into the cover and get the win. This ended Cage’s reign with the belt, 377 days after being granted it by ‘The Human Suplex Machine’.
With Cage now fully ejected from the faction, it will be interesting to see where AEW go with Starks and Cage now with their careers likely taking drastically different paths. It seems a feud may take place with fans expected to back Cage who had showed defiance within the group for months after Taz’s stable lost to Sting and Darby Allin at Revolution.
