Willie Mack (Apr 21st – Jul 18th 2020)
The biggest man to hold the title (of the Anthem era) since Brian Cage, Willie Mack became a champion who once again was set out on proving that the X-Division is not about lightweights or smaller sized competitors, it’s about giving all you’ve got & battling through anyone who wants to take you on. Willie winning the X-Division title was a welcome & much needed boost for him as before Hard To Kill 2020, Rich Swann was injured the night before the pay per view at the start of a match with Willie Mack against OVE, Willie Mack & Rich Swann were destined to face The North (Ethan Page & Josh Alexander) for the Impact Wrestling Tag Team Titles but with Swann injured, Willie Mack took The North on alone in what might have been booked as The North’s last night as champions (who knows?) if Rich Swann was fit to compete.
Willie Mack would continue a rivalry between himself, Chris Bey & Johnny Swinger while the right time for the next push was building, during the build the Covid-19 pandemic had thrown all plans up in the air & Impact had managed to keep Willie Mack & Chris Bey in the fan’s headlights with Cousin Jake (Jake Something) of The Deaners & Rohit Raju building momentum after winning a 6 man number one contendership match, Willie Mack would challenge Ace Austin at Rebellion & continue his rivalry against Chris Bey & Rohit Raju throughout his run as champion.
Willie Mack became champion at a very difficult time for the pro-wrestling industry, his run as champion wasn’t as long as expected & obviously given the issues faced (in terms of health & safety under the pandemic) wasn’t as filled with as much high drama as fans who’ve seen him wrestle elsewhere had hoped, although we still saw the heart, determination & incredible wrestling ability Willie brings every night. But what a lack of match diversity (ladder matches, cage matches instead of another Street Fight, which fans wanted) did offer both him & a lot of his opponents was room for experimentation, building up long term rivalries & this would pay off even more for Chris Bey & more notably Rohit Raju. I for one, am hoping that we will see this man back in the hunt for the X-Division title.
