Future Prospects?

With Josh Alexander as our current X-Division champion, Scott D’Amore & Don Callis’ goal to revamp & bring the X-Division to the forefront has been achieved, with a majority of it’s preceding champions still active & on long term contracts with Impact, the way forward for the X-Division is upwards with the huge swing of perspective hopefully in a position where things won’t run out of momentum as quickly as it’s settled. Which given the quality of matches seen throughout 2020 to now is going to take a huge disappointment to even scratch the surface of negativity right now.

Right now I see a couple of realistic prospects as 2021 continues. As Josh Alexander is now defending the title against NJPW talent & is set to face TJP in a series of matches to back up their historic Ironman match planned over the summer (elsewhere on the independent scene), it was announced on June 17th that at Slammiversary, we have a 6-way number Ultimate X match between Ace Austin, Trey Miguel, Chris Bey, Rohit Raju & Petey Williams & Josh Alexander for the X-Division Championship. This could either end the amazing opportunity to keep building up the X-Division with Josh Alexander at the helm as Impact’s “King of the Mountain” or should he retain, this opens up more room to build the rivalries heating up between the 4 main contenders for the X-Division title, Ace Austin, Rohit Raju, Chris Bey & Trey Miguel & while a lot of fans were calling for this match sooner, it could be a great opportunity to bring back the King of the Mountain match as an extra way to defend the X-Division (or the World Title in future depending on how successful the returning match would be) or possibly bringing back the King of the Mountain title although balancing this with the X-Division as it has now finally returned to it’s former glory might be counterproductive.

After Slammiversary, I can see (and would like to see) Petey Williams taking the next step forward to a finally face off against Josh Alexander. This could then lead to another emotionally charged “last hurrah” retirement from Impact Wrestling or simply mark the beginning of a new era for the X-Division, at Bound For Glory. Title or non title, this would be fantastic but Josh Alexander remaining champion coming into this adds a bit more to the match’s merit should it happen & be for aforementioned reasons.

Outside of Josh Alexander, stars on longer contracts such as Ace Austin, Chris Bey & Trey Miguel have already being dubbed “the future of the X-Division” & it’s only a matter of time before Trey finally breaks his string of bad luck at the big matches to finally get that X-Division championship around his waist if not by Slammiversary then most definitely by Bound For Glory or Rebellion 2022. There are other stars on Impact’s roster who can really rock the boat further from Crazzy Steve (a former X-Division Champion) or Black Taurus to Acey Romero & Jake Something (both who have challenged for this title on several occasions & left a good impression that they deserved that opportunity & any more to come.

Matches between stars from NJPW in the Tag & X-Division from Fin Juice (David Finlay, Juice Robertson taking on The Good Brothers & El Phantasmo taking on Josh Alexander) are increasing the amount of interest for wrestlers outside Impact to come on in & the X-Division has always been a huge draw for talent from Japan & Mexico. Whatever else you can think of, there’s a chance it’ll happen because right now, the X-Division truly is back to being about “No Limits”.
