Kevin Sullivan’s relation to music was not quite as on-the-nose but was a reflection of the metal counterculture of the time. Seeing the popularity of musical acts such as Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Iron Maiden from the 1960s-1980s, Sullivan decided to build his character around the idea of being a potential sadist.

Nicknamed ‘The Prince of Darkness’, this gimmick started in Championship Wrestling From Florida in the early 80s –  just as the goth-heavy, darker wave of talents emerged on MTV. Often alongside wife Woman, the sexual occultist wore glum face-paint and had reptiles to show his eerie, ominous nature. Sullivan may have lacked in height, but his character managed to get him to be enough of a credible threat to be in top feuds with the likes of Dusty Rhodes and Hulk Hogan.

Clearly this aided Sullivan’s career longevity, having worked for the following wrestling companies in his career: WWWF, WCW, ROH, MLW, ECW, SMW, NWA, AJPW and many more.
