Top 50 Greatest Wrestling Heels of all time
33. The Rock
Whilst it may seem The Rock is low in our countdown, it is worth noting he is better regarded throughout his career as a top face, as opposed to runs as a heel – as great as his heel runs were.
Seeing his initial introduction as a face flop, Rocky Maivia soon sold this soul to join and lead The Nation of Domination. The Rock kicked out once-leader Faarooq and engaged in a feud with DX and won the IC title. A brief face turn was just another swerve as The Rock joined The McMahon’s Corporation, turning on the fans and becoming the leaders’ chosen top guy. Now sided with the authority, his most memorable matches took place including ones with Mick Foley and Steve Austin.
The Rock turned heel significantly again in 2003. Entering the twilight of his in-ring days, he became a Hollywood big shot. Now renowned for his brilliant ability to berate the hometown sports team, this role is an underrated yet amazing one. He would shockingly lose to The Hurricane but go on to end both his and Steve Austin’s career when finally beating Austin at WrestleMania 19.
