Although likely better remembered today as a colorful, intense, high-flying good guy – it is impossible to deny his impact as a heel.

Savage debuted in the WWF as a heel after coming off a huge heel run in Memphis alongside brother Lanny. He managed to capture the Intercontinental title from Tito Santana in 1986 with the use of brass knuckles before feuding with George ‘The Animal’ Steele with whom he would feud with. Steele fought for the affections of his innocent crush Elizabeth whilst Randy would exploit and be paranoid for his manager and real-life wife. Savage would hold onto his IC belt for well over 400 days (the 2nd longest single reign ever) before losing it to Ricky Steamboat in one of the greatest matches in WWE history.

After a top face run, Savage grew increasingly overprotective of Elizabeth and irritated at tag partner Hogan’s treatment of Miss Liz. Savage soon turned heel on Hulk by thwarting him with his WWF championship. His next heel run saw him main event both WrestleMania 5 and 1989’s SummerSlam. He would go on to become ‘Macho King’ after beating Jim Duggan, going on a memorable run having ditched Elizabeth for the maniacal Sherri Martel.

Savage would also have a large heel run in WCW when joining the NWO. With a distinctive black bandana, beard and sunglasses, he would feud with rivals of the faction such as Bret Hart, Roddy Piper and Diamond Dallas Page. He would further garner multiple female valets before leaving WCW in 1999.
