The Weekly Report:
Greetings & let’s discuss the top 5 wrestling headlines for Sunday, January 22.
WrestleBuddy presents its weekly recap regarding pro wrestling’s latest stories and rumors. Our team works diligently to provide updates in case you missed what transpired this week. Without any further ado, here’s an analysis with details of these reports.
1. Jay Briscoe passes away
This week has proved heartbreaking. Professional wrestling suffered a sad loss with the passing of Jay Briscoe ( Jamin Pugh), who died on Tuesday, January 17th, due to a tragic automobile accident. It occurred in Laurel, Deleware. It’s where Jay & Mark Briscoe ( The Briscoe Brothers) lived. He was 38 years old, leaving behind a wife & three children. AEW President announced the news via Twitter to inform everyone regarding Jay’s passing. His daughters Gracie and Jayleigh both were in the car. Later, we found out that the daughters suffered injuries. Jay’s wife Ashley provided updates through family friend Joshua Wharton. Gracie would need surgery. Organizers related to a fundraiser for the Briscoe Family revealed positive news. Gracie had movement in her legs & Jayleigh was moved into a wheelchair.
Jay & brother Mark carved out one magnificent legacy beginning with the promotion Ring of Honor! They appealed to fans because these two showed realism. Both siblings farmed & their grit translated on screen. These men transcended wrestling, dominating tag teams in the process. Briscoe & brother Mark quickly became featured stars for ROH concerning 20 years of wrestling on their debut show circa 2002. Also, The Briscoes appeared in TNA-Impact, New Japan Pro Wrestling, NWA, GCW, & multiple independent promotions. Rest in Peace -Jay Briscoe-Reach for the Sky!!! 1984-2023.
2. Meltzer reports no Rock return/ WWE selling his Merchandise
Wrestling fans may need to contain any excitement about The Rock returning to WWE. Despite rumors of Hollywood’s most electrifying superstar embarking on an immanent comeback to challenge Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns when WrestleMania goes Hollywood in Los Angeles this year. Such a match would create popular headlines.
Dave Meltzer reported that The Rock had informed WWE concerning his time frame to get into proper shape for Mania! He could alter those plans. Maybe, Rock and Reigns still have a future encounter down the road. The Royal Rumble is drawing near & based on surprises. Meltzer noted WWE possibly keeping this the scenario is secretive.
WrestleMania 39 emanates via April from SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
WWE did promote Rock’s merchandise recently. Is that a potential clue?
3. Vince McMahon facing lawsuits
Vince McMahon faces more lawsuits since his WWE cooperate return. The company has new challenges with Vinny Mac back at its helm. Accusations continue against the executive chairman.
Michael McCann of Sportico reported Detroit’s Police & Fire Retirement System sued McMahon because they could potentially block him from regaining control of WWE’s board of directors & his ability to expedite a sale.
I see difficulty arising here regarding Vince as Chairman. Respectfully, how can these administrations defeat a resilient businessman like McMahon? From what we learned, the lawsuit argues that Vince has imposed his will on WWE & the board. Such filing amendments would impair this board from making critical business decisions. Another argumentive factor concludes McMahon’s return violated both Section 141 of the Deleware General Cooperation Law & WWE’s charter won’t permit a transfer of power within WWE.
Via The Wall Street Journal on Thursday, Jan. 19th, Vince McMahon had agreed to a multimillion-dollar settlement with ex-WWE referee Rita Chatterton who accused him of rape in 1986. Chatterton asked for $ 11.75 million in damages. She accepted a lesser, but still seven-digit amount. Mcmahon’s lawyer stated that he settled “ solely to avoid the cost of litigation. “ he added Vince always maintains his innocence.
4. Nick Khan roasts Tony Khan in Interview
Bill Simmons recently interviewed WWE CEO Nick Khan on his podcast. He asked him about Tony Khan. His response “ I think I’ve never met the kid. “ He said that he seems nice. I don’t know him, says Nick Khan. The CEO has met his father, Shad Khan, who he randomly sat next to during a sports luncheon. Nick explained he & Stephanie McMahon attended about a year and a half ago.
He complimented Shad Khan by saying the man is impressive. Nick Khan praised his business sense & ventures. One illustration included owning The Jacksonville Jaguars.
Simmons asked Nick if he felt AEW was a true competitor or a threat to WWE’s position as the undisputed leader in its industry. He dismissed the notion, “ I don’t feel threatened by anyone on anything. “
Nick continued, “ I don’t care what anyone else is doing. I care what we’re doing. And as long as we can have the best writers, I think we are in good shape. “
5. Devon Dudley resigns from WWE/ Santino Marella signs with Impact Wrestling
WWE Hall of Famer & former Tag Team Champion Devon Dudley ( Devon Hughes ) announced via Twitter on Thursday, Jan. 19, that he was leaving the company. He began working as a producer for WWE in 2016. Recently, his role entailed training talent for their NXT brand.
He thanked Vince, Triple H, & Stephanie but felt it was the best decision for all parties involved. D-von discussed what an honor it was working with the young talent & the team at NXT. His sons Terrence & Tyrell have wrestled on AEW’s YouTube shows & the independent scene.
Former WWE star Santino Marella signs with Impact Wrestling!
The promotion had announced via Instagram that Marella did officially sign with them. We don’t know the exact terms of this deal.
He shocked wrestling audiences by appearing at Impact’s Hard To Kill event & he was named the new Director of Authority. Santino will be Scott D’Amore’s temporary replacement because Bully Ray took him out on the January 5th Impact Wrestling episode.
That’s WB’s leading news for the week.
