Owen Hart

In one of only 2 non-tag matches of the night, the vacant Intercontinental championship was up for grabs as Owen Hart took on Faarooq in a rare heel vs heel match. Steve Austin broke his neck at SummerSlam so the belt was held up. In this match, about 99% of the attention of the match was on ‘Stone Cold’ as he got up to a number of antics, with the crowd going wild for him showing how he was the most popular wrestler in the company at that point. Owen would prevail after Austin hit Faarooq with the belt, allowing Hart to get the win.

Hart is unfortunately no longer with us, passing away aged 34 in 1999 at the Over The Edge PPV. Under his Blue Blazer persona, he was supposed to dramatically drop to the ring via a harness but this malfunctioned causing a drop of over 70 feet. In order to piece together the story of wrestling’s darkest day, documentary-makers Dark Side Of The Ring made an episode about the death of Owen Hart.

After a tribute to wrestling legends from St Louis, we got a contest for the IC belt. Getting into the tournament via fluke when Ken Shamrock was injured, the former Ron Simmons scraped out a semi-final win over Ahmed Johnson via DQ before falling to Owen in the finals. Now the leader of The Nation, wrestling’s first black world champion had already seen tag success alongside ‘Hawksaw’ Butch Reed but would perhaps most memorably team with Bradshaw in the APA.

Simmons was inducted into the 2012 Hall of Fame and still makes sporadic WWE legend appearances, including some in the last few years. His appearances more often than not show him in a wacky or strange segment before yelling his signature catchphrase: “Damn!”.
