On July 18th, WWE once again returns to one of the greatest assets in their box of gimmick matches – Money In The Bank. Before it became its own spin-off event, it took place annually at WWE’s biggest event of the year, WrestleMania. The very first of these matches took place in 2005 at the 20th anniversary of WrestleMania – WrestleMania 21 in 2005. Here, we will look back on that historic card to see where all the players on the main card of that event are today.

Rey Mysterio

The opening match of the event saw tag champion take on tag champion as tag partners Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero created one of the greatest openers in the history of the event. The luchador got the win over Eddie, pinning Chavo’s brother and his fellow WWE Tag Team titleholder following a Hurricanrana.  Mysterio would win the World Heavyweight title the next year in Eddie’s honor.  Mysterio was propelled to the top of the card, with the Mexican sensation heavily paying tribute to Eddie on TV, with his real-life close friend triumphing for the world title in a feel-good moment at ‘Mania 22.

Today, Mysterio is one-half of the SmackDown Tag Team champions alongside son Dominick. The 8-time Cruiserweight champion recently challenged Roman Reigns for the Universal title on the SmackDown before the Hell In A Cell PPV (in a match nonetheless held in the gimmick).

Eddie Guerrero

The bout between tag partners and no tag matches on this card only highlighted the dwindling tag division at the time, with the Latino duo fighting mostly unestablished names like The Bashams, Luther Reigns and Mark Jindrak, and Charlie Haas and Hardcore Holly. Guerrero would lose this bout to Mysterio but it would not be long before the liar, cheater and stealer would turn on his partner for a heel run which mostly saw him face Rey.

Eddie would, unfortunately, pass away in November 2005, less than a year after this match. His death came as a shock as the 38-year-old was still an active member of the roster, with his death causing a tribute show on the next episode of Raw.
