WrestleMania is right around the corner, and this year is shaping up to be one of the best cards we’ve seen in a long time. With the prospect of Gunther vs. Sheamus 2, John Cena finally facing Austin Theory, and Edge ending his rivalry with the Judgement Day, there is a lot to get us excited for the biggest show of the year. However, right at the top of the that list is seeing who will challenge the Tribal Chief for the Undisputed Universal Championship in the main event. Before a couple of months ago, the main consensus was that Cody Rhodes was a deadlock to face and possibly beat Roman Reigns. Unfortunately for the American Nightmare, no one saw the rise in popularity that Sami Zayn was about to obtain heading into the Showcase of the Immortals. Now there is a toss up about how the main event will look. Cody Rhodes has already punched his ticket to the main event of WrestleMania by winning the 2023 Men’s Royal Rumble match, but it is hard to see a positive end to this Sami Zayn and Bloodline story that ends with Sami not winning the championships from Roman. So, what does WWE need to do? Well, in this article I am going to make the argument that Sami Zayn doesn’t need to be involved in the main event to properly tie a bow on his story, while making the case that Cody Rhodes is the absolute right choice to face and dethrone Roman Reigns.
Now, if you have been listening to our podcast, The Pipe Bomb Wrestling Podcast, you know that I am all for Sami Zayn defeating Roman Reigns and finally taking those championships from him. However, as time has gone on it is getting harder and harder to deny Cody Rhodes his moment at WrestleMania. The main concern for the American Nightmare coming back was that he was going to face the Roman treatment in 2015 and the fans were going to turn on him winning, but that couldn’t have been farther from the truth. Cody made his return in the Royal Rumble and got one of the biggest reactions of the night. Even after winning the Rumble, the next time he showed up on TV, the fans were firmly behind him. Cody Rhodes has earned the respect of the fans, just like Sami, and it seems like if Sami isn’t the one to dethrone Roman, Cody is the next best choice for the fans.
Fan support isn’t the only important thing about this main event taking place, but the story has to be there for the fans to truly be invested. Whatever story follows this Sami Zayn storyline is going to be in a bad spot. It is hard to deny the impact that the Sami story has had on WWE, ratings, and Premium Live Event buys. There was a chance that the story between Roman and Cody would be forced and not feel as strong or as important, but Paul Heyman and Cody Rhodes did a fantastic job to explain why this championship match is so important to both Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes. Cody being the son of the man who trained and made some of the biggest stars in the WWE facing the man that has had the greatest success from Dusty’s NXT is the perfect redemption story for Cody to overcome.
The timing of everything happen couldn’t be more percent as well. One year from returning to the company that never had faith in him, to face the man that was known as Dusty’s favorite NXT son, to facing the greatest success story from that class. Cody Rhodes coming back home and winning the championship that has eluded his family at the Grandest Stage of Them All is the perfect end to Cody’s story.
But where does this leave Sami Zayn? It is highly unlikely that Sami Zayn will dethrone Roman Reigns at the Elimination Chamber, but the most important thing is how Sami loses this match. The likely outcome from Montreal is Roman walking away with the championship and a major portion of the heat going towards Jey Uso. But, there is a great chance that the main event of WrestleMania could be a triple threat with Roman defending against Cody Rhodes and Sami Zayn. Would this take away from Sami’s win or Cody’s win? Could this cause more damage than good?
The backlash to Sami not winning the championship at WrestleMania could be massive, and derail the entire story behind Roman’s 3-year championship reign. If Sami wins, were does Cody go from here? The best case scenario would be for Roman vs. Cody to stay a singles main event, and let the story play out between Sami and KO and the Uso’s. Cody gets his championship win at WrestleMania, while Sami and KO get their moment in the sun against the Uso’s.
The scenario is there for both men to get their moment in the spotlight. Cody Rhodes should be the one to face and beat Roman Reigns at WrestleMania, while Sami Zayn should team up with Kevin Owens to take down the Uso’s historic tag-team championship reign. Cody said it best this past Monday on RAW, it is time for Cody and Sami to finish their stories at WrestleMania!
