What We’ve Learned: In Conversation With…Louis Dangoor
On the 6th of August, I had the privilege of interviewing renowned wrestling journalist Louis Dangoor. Now the head wrestling writer for Give Me Sport, he has worked with known names like WrestleTalk and Fightful. Having conducted interviews with everyone from Ric Flair to Drew McIntyre, he has displayed a brilliant mind of the wrestling industry, so we of course jumped at the chance to see what we could learn from this revered reporter. You may find the results quite interesting.
We should specify that Louis should not be held accountable if any comments are subject to change or incorrect, as these are merely speculation and well-justified predictions.
You can find the full interview on the Wrestlebuddy YouTube page:
“I think [Daniel Bryan and CM Punk in AEW] will happen. They’ve been teased too much.”
The news of AEW’s potential signings in CM Punk and Daniel Bryan shocked the wrestling world. When I asked Louis if he thinks these two megastars would debut in Tony Khan’s promotion, he said he thought it would.
He explained he thinks both will happen, justifying they’ve been teased too much to now not happen. He cites the Chicago show and Tony Khan’s inability to comment on these rumors as reasons for this. although he (like all of us) was “shocked…at both”.
Furthermore, he proclaims Punk could be a “game-changer” for AEW and that Bryan is a “huge name” before saying the two signings could be “tide-shifting for AEW”. He claims “I do think Punk will come in, 100 percent”.
“I think Bray [Wyatt] is a guy that doesn’t even need wrestling.”
Commenting on the recent WWE release of Bray Wyatt, Dangoor brings up an interesting concept as to where he may wrestle next – nowhere. Louis does not outright state this is where he will or should good but says he has such a creative mind he could instead become a star on the Silver Screen.
Elsewhere he things Bray could go to Impact and have “so much fun there” with new creative ground. Dangoor eventually says “for me, he lands in AEW”. He stills says he could see him “not doing wrestling” but does say he also sees his possibilities working for another promotion, saying Tony Khan might be interested in Bray’s money-making talents.
“I can very much see a world where Braun Strowman returns [to WWE].”
Asking about a potential return to WWE for “The Monster Among Men”, Dangoor explained that Braun is a “WWE guy” as that is the only promotion he had worked for up until his release. He calls Braun “a perfect fit for WWE” and that for him “Braun is a dead certain [sic] to come back”.
He explains that Braun is not really the type of wrestler you would expect on the AEW roster and that Braun will be back with the company within little time.
“I think what you’re gonna see now is the New Japan and AEW relationship.”
When discussing the longevity of the current collaboration between Impact and AEW, Louis observes that there are few huge, money-producing dream matches left to do. With this, he believes the next big alliance between promotions will be AEW and NJPW with talents from each company appearing in each other’s companies.
The Give Me Sports writer names Daniel Bryan vs Zack Sabre Jr., Kota Ibushi vs Kenny Omega and Minoru Suzuki vs Jon Moxley as anticipated dream matches for a NJPW/AEW cross-over. Stating there are “many options”, he stays it is “so exciting” in terms of the possibilities in the wrestling world today.
“Roman Reigns, in 5 years, I don’t think will be full-time in the WWE.”
Wrestlers are no strangers to embracing the Hollywood scene and becoming the biggest actors in world – the most successful of which include John Cena, The Rock and Batista.
When I asked about who he thinks might be the next huge star in the movie world, Louis quickly quipped that it will be Roman Reigns. Already resembling Aquaman actor Jason Mamoa, Reigns has already made some acting roles such as in Fast and Furious: Hobbs and Shaw. Louis continues: “he’s shown with his new gimmick he can act”, saying he thinks he will be a “John Cena” – referring to a figure who makes occasional sprees in the company whilst one of the biggest celebrities outside the ring.
He also sees Cody Rhodes in a similar role, backing this by “The American Nightmare”‘s “external activities” such as the Go-Big Show which may be a sign he will “branch out” to other roles away from professional wrestling.
Everyone at Wrestlebuddy is honored to have had Louis Dangoor on the show.
