A Coffin Match

In the long list of WWE gimmick matches, it is probably fair to say that the coffin match is not necessarily one of the favorites. An interesting concept, it debuted in the WWF at 1992’s Survivor Series PPV, in which The Undertaker defeated Kamala. In the years since, there have been 19 more casket matches, with the stipulation becoming synonymous with the ‘Dead Man’ for his involvement in nearly all matches of the type.

After defeating Bear Bronson this week, ‘All Ego’ Ethan Page announced he still had unfinished business with Darby Allin, challenging the former TNT champion to a coffin match. The first one to take place in a major wrestling company since 2018 and the first in AEW history, it is yet another bow in the gimmick match string of Allin. It is yet to be seen what the match will look like in AEW – likely with a unique presentation to the WWE.

This has an interesting dynamic as the cowardly heel has set the challenge rather than being challenged by the darker character whilst Page runs scared. Featuring the perfect characters, it will likely be a memorable bout when it takes place – perhaps on a future episode of Dynamite.
