8. Lance Von Erich – The Von Erichs
It is fair to say that in their time in Texas, the Von Erich family were practically deity. With their good looks, wrestling acumen and family values, they became an unfathomably big name as the children of Fritz challenged the Fabulous Freebirds in the 80s. The beloved Southern boys were huge names in their era but unfortunately not all could reach the true heights it seemed was in store for them.
In October 1985, Mike was away from the ring due to toxic shock syndrome so wrestler William Vaughn was promptly dropped into the group under the forename Lance, being granted the Von Erich surname to try to fit in despite not being related. His WCCW run also saw his face Ric Flair in the last NWA World title match in the territory. Not a true Von Erich, his role in the group was largely criticised by fans who did not buy into the legitimacy of any of this. In a twist of irony, whilst only 1 true Von Erich survives today (Kevin), Lance is still alive today.
